Bambusa vulgaris have moderately loose culms with no thorns. Culms are lemon yellow with green stripes and dark green leaves.  Culm walls are slightly thick. Nodes are slightly inflated. Culm leaves are deciduous with dense pubescence. Leaf blades are narrowly lanceolate. Flowering at the interval of several decades, when the whole population of an area blooms at once. Fruit set is extremely rare.
