Fruits are edible. The leaves are effective in treating abscesses and are used internally against worms. Crushed leaves or a paste of the flesh may be poulticed on boils, abscesses and ulcers. Unripe fruits and the bark are rich in tannin.  A decoction made by boiling  leaves, bark and green fruits for 5 minutes in a litre of water is found to be effective in treating severe cases of diarrhoea and dysentery.  A concentrated extract of the seed is also used as a remedy for dysentery and diarrhoea. The finely grated stem bark is placed on the area of an enlarged spleen. To relieve toothache, fragments of the root bark are packed around the gums. Root decoction is taken as a febrifuge to bring down fevers.
