Arabic has started as second language in Maharaja’s college, Ernakulam in 1944. E.K. Kunhahammed Kutti Moulavi was the first Head of the department. After him, Edassery Mohammed Moulavi was appointed as Head. In 1968 B.A. Arabic Degree course started in the department. Prof. C.Ummer was the Head of the department at that time. In 1979 M.A. Arabic Degree Course started. Many Arabic scholars like Dr.E.K. Ahmed Kutty, Prof. K.A.Siddiq Hassan, Prof. V. Muhammedali, Prof. Haneef Palliyath, Former Registrar of University of Calicut Dr.P.P. Muhammed served in this department in different periods. It was a great pride of the department that Dr. Liyaqath Ali, former Head of the department during period 2008-12, 2014-17 got selected on deputation as Director of Moulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture, Cairo, Egypt.
In 2005 the department was upgraded as Research department. Dr.A. Aboobacker and Dr.P.P. Mohammed were research guides. Presently there are six research guides and fourteen research students in the department. The department differs from other departments in the college with its vibrant faculty. There are 30 seats for UG programme and 10 seats for PG programme. In every year, the department gains best results in the examinations. Also the department supports the students in the extra-curricular activities. The department has a good placement record as the majority of the students are placed in better jobs inside and outside the country.
The department offers B.A Programme, M.A Programme and Ph.D Programme in Arabic. On the successful completion of these programmes, students can easily access the horizons of new employment opportunities. Our students have emerged as illustrious personalities in various avenues as film actors, advocates, writers etc. The most famous film actor Bharath Mammootty was an alumnus of the department.
