DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

 

RESEARCH

 

The Department was recognised as a Research Department in the year 1991 by Mahatma Gandhi University. The initiative for this was taken by the head of the Department Dr. M K Rudra Warier and Dr. G Ambika and the field of research were spectroscopy, Material Science and Nonlinear Dynamics. Dr. M K Rudra Warier guided two students to Ph.D. During the first decade of twentieth century, four students completed their Ph.D under the guidance of Dr. G Ambika. Exemplary research led by Dr. E. M. Mohammed, in the field of Magnetism and Nano technology, had produced more than 100 research papers and 4 Ph.D. and one more student of him submitted Ph. D thesis. Dr. N Shaji had guided 2 students to Ph.D and another student submitted Ph.D thesis in the field of quantum Information Theory. Two more students got Ph.D under the Guidance of Dr. P. I Paulose and Dr. B. Syamalakumari. One more student submitted Ph.D thesis under the guidance of Dr. B. Syamalakumari in the field of conducting polymers.

Currently, there are five Research guides in the Department: Dr. Tina Sebastian, Dr. Sivakumar C., Dr. Rekha S., Dr.Krishnaprasad P. S. and Dr.E. M. Mohammed, and the thrust areas of Research in the Department are Magnetic Nano materials, Thin Film and Nanostructure Materials, Quantum Computation and Quantum Information Theory and Photonics. The Department has a well-equipped Research lab with material synthesis facilities like Vacuum Deposition Unit, Muffle Furnace, Centrifuge, Hot air oven tec. and material characterisation facilities like SEM, precision impedance analyser, Keithly DC conductivity measurement set up, UV-visible spectrophotometer, etc.

Seminars, Workshops

Every year, the Department conducts a number of National Seminars/Workshops and other invited Lectures. They are

  • National seminars and workshops each year under the sponsorship of Directorate of Collegiate Education, Govt. of Kerala.
  • Stephen Hawking Memorial Lecture Series, comprised of four lectures, in memory of the late eminent Scientist Stephen William Hawking. This lecture series has been conducted for the last 3 years.
  • Physics Alumni -MAPS in collaboration with the Department has been conducting ‘Dr. Sathy Menon Memorial Technical Lecture’ for the last 6 years.
  • Several other Invited lectures each year.
