Profile of the Department

 

          The Department of Economics is one of the oldest department in Maharaja’s College which came into existence in 1875 and became a full-fledged department when B.A Economics was started in 1925. The department was elevated into a Post Graduate Department of Economics in the year 1951. The legacy of the department reached to its peak when it was recognized as a Research Centre under Mahatma Gandhi University in April 2002. The Honours Degree course in Economics was started in the year in 2014. At Present, Maharaja’s College is the only Government Autonomous Institution in Kerala which offers Honours Degree in Economics. The Department supports post graduate programmes (M.A and Ph.D) and undergraduate programmes (B.A. Model 1 and B.A.Honours) in Economics. The hallmark of these programmes is the potent curriculum offered which is continuously revised and updated with latest developments in discipline.

          The Department is proud of its many former faculty members who have made remarkable contributions to the Kerala Economics. The Department is also delighted with illustrious alumni who have attained considerable eminence in academia, Indian policy making, the civil services, media etc. Among them are the Present Member of Parliament and former defence minister for India Sri A.K Antony and the present Finance minister of Kerala Dr.T.M Thomas Isaac.The present department is building on this evolving tradition and continues to perform academic research activities, teaching and public service. Current faculty and research scholars have published their research in leading journals and won prestigious awards. Apart from pursuing their research activities, several members of the faculty also serve on committees of various internal and external academic bodies.

Looking outward        

 

          The Department maintains an interface with the economics profession and society at large. Over the years, it has hosted a long list of distinguished academicians as speakers. Conferences, workshops and seminars are important mediums for the Department’s research engagement with the economics profession at large. Several members of the faculty serve on committees of various external academic bodies and board of studies.

Academic infrastructure

Department has two academic blocks including heritage block and high tech honours block.

Teaching and research in the Department are supported by excellent infrastructure, technical facilities, and a well-stocked library. All classrooms are smart classrooms equipped with audio-visual facilities. The Department has a computer lab for UG, PG and Ph. D. students. The main seminar hall is air-conditioned and equipped with audio-visual facilities, digital podium and television. 

The department library is one of the best collections in economics and related disciplines. It has a collection of about  books and journals, and subscribes to various academic journals (print and online versions)
