OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Research has always been one of the key exercises that serves to enhance academic knowledge and infuse ardour into higher education. Maharaja’s College is foremost among the pioneering institutions that have forged an indelible stamp in the educational arena by producing many stalwarts in their own distinct ways promulgating its legacy. Maharaja’s College, a Government Autonomous College with the good repute of being one of the five centers of Excellence in the state of Kerala, was established in the year 1875. This special grade college affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University offers Ph.D. courses in Arabic English, Hindi, Malayalam, Sanskrit under the Language stream, Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Zoology under the Science stream and Commerce, Economics, History, Islamic history, Philosophy and Political science under the Social Science stream. The sanctioned order number with year of each research department is given in Table-1.
After the implementation of Autonomy in 2015, six departments have been sanctioned as research departments. So out of the 19 departments in the college, 17 have been elevated to the status of research departments. There are 92 recognized supervising guides under whose guidance 214 research scholars are pursuing their research at Maharaja’s College Ernakulam. A detailed department wise list of supervising guides and research scholars are given in Table-2.
The number of students opting to pursue research degree shows an increasing trend. The total Ph.D. admissions doubled from 2015 to 2020. The implicit growth rates in these numbers show that the overall Ph.D. admissions increased during this period. 94 research scholars were admitted in the previous academic year. Maximum numbers of Ph.D. students are enrolled in Language stream followed by Social Science/Humanities and Science streams respectively.
The activities of the Research Committee, Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, are summarized below:
COURSE WORK CLASSES
Research in any discipline is an ongoing process of enhancing the existing fund of knowledge by exploring new frontiers that challenge the human quest for understanding reality. Course work classes have been arranged for research scholars, department-wise and also stream-wise. The classes were handled by eminent resource persons with expertise in their field. To overcome the research-writing-skill deficiency among a large number of students, training programs on writing skills were organized. Now the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus has created an unprecedented situation. So, during this pandemic condition, we have already shifted to e-education. In this situation of dire compulsion, we have been conducting a series of webinars which has won great appreciation from research scholars of our college and other institutions.
HALF YEARLY PROGRESS REPORT PRESENTATION
Halfyearly and yearly reviews of research leading to Ph.D. degrees are held to monitor progress and to keep track of the student's estimated date of completion. Through this, the student reviews the stated objectives, success in attaining objectives, research output and results, publications, conference attendance, etc. In addition, it allows the student and his/her supervisor, the opportunity to identify achievable targets for the coming six months. Accordingly, Ph.D. degree candidates are required to submit progress reports through their supervisor(s) and the Head of the Department to the Registrar, Mahatma Gandhi University, at every six months from the date of registration. The Yearly Progress Reports will be reviewed by a panel appointed by the principal. The panel includes an external expert before whom the students are required to make an oral presentation of his/her research work prior to the submission of the half yearly progress report.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL COURSE WORK EXAMINATIONS
Internal Course work examinations were conducted by each department and the internal marks of course work examinations were sent to the Registrar, Mahatma Gandhi University. External course work Paper III examinations were conducted as per the timetable of M.G. University and external mark list of the research scholars were sent to the MG University through proper channel.
RESEARCH ORIENTATION PROGRAMME (ROP)
Research not only generates useful insight and confidence but also acts as a stimulant for academic growth. Sound conceptual understanding of various research methods, research instruments, tools and techniques is an essential prerequisite for conducting empirical research. For undergoing high quality research and writing good research papers, one requires to collect, interpret and logically document the information. The art of drawing coherent conclusions, supported by appropriate research tools and reference citation is vital for quality research work. The core objective of the Research Orientation Programme (ROP) was to equip the research scholars with set of skills and potentiality to undertake the research very effectively and to turn completed research into publishable material of high quality in the form of articles, journals and books. The programme was multi-disciplinary in nature that seeks to improve research capacity on how to write and publish research paper, project proposals and to prepare project reports, update participants on various research grant opportunities and potential funding agencies, acquaint the participant with open sources of information, online tools and resources for Scientific Writing, develop skills and the ability to undertake research on various current issues using appropriate data and methodologies (quantitative and qualitative).

SASTRAYAAN
Research is an exciting, enlightening, complex, fundamental, precise, logical, and creative activity all at the same time. However, for the public to get in touch with it and understand why it encompasses all these concepts, efforts need to be made to bridge our research-related activities and society. Public awareness is the public’s level of understanding about the importance and implications of our research activities. It can be done through specific planned events, poster campaigns, newspaper articles, workshops, Measurement and analysis using Current Laboratory Methods etc. With this aim, Research Committee, Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam had arranged SASTRAYAN on 22 & 23 February 2018 to make complex information more tangible and disseminate it as broadly as possible so that the public can understand and be engaged. The purpose of the Programme was also to provide exposure to the Research scholars, teachers and research guides of Maharaja’s College Ernakulam in the various departments into the ever expanding areas of interdisciplinary research in which they can have contributions in advanced areas.
There are more than 850 publications with ISSN /ISBN numbers and among these more than 300 publications were in Scopus, WoS listed and UGC care listed Journals.
