DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
|
OVERVIEW
The department of physics was established along with the inception of the college in the 1875. The department started offering graduate programme in 1925, on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of the college. It was in 1957, soon after the formation of the state of Kerala, that postgraduate programme was sanctioned and thus the department became one of the first of its kind to offer master’s in the happening area of physics. In 34 years the department crossed another milestone: it was elevated to the status of a centre offering research leading to the degree of Ph.D. New generation vocational course in the subject—B.Sc. instrumentation— was started in 1996. In 2002 the department came under the sponsorship of DST -FIST programme. Research laboratories were renovated and equipped in 2010-11.
The department now offers two undergraduate programmes, one postgraduate programme and is a research centre. The programmes offered are:
1) B. Sc. Physics
2) B. Sc. Physics Instrumentation
3) M.Sc. Physics
4) Ph. D.
The postgraduate is offered in two streams: one with specialization in theoretical physics and the other with applied physics. The thrust areas of research in the department are magnetic materials, thin film and nanostructure materials, quantum information theory and microwave antenna technology.
