DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

OVERVIEW

The Department of Mathematics is a thriving community of dedicated teachers, diligent researchers and devoted students sharing the enthusiasm for Mathematics. As one of the basic science departments, the department remains as the fulcrum of teaching that offers many foundational math courses for the students of Maharaja’s College.

The Department aims to mold a student with scientific insight and research skills to face the challenges in the fields of Mathematics, and to equip them to serve the nation in the progression.

The Department was established in 1875 and the Under Graduate programme in Mathematics started in 1931.From the year 1951, the Department has started to offer the Master of Science programme in mathematics.The Department elevated as a Research Centre under Mahatma Gandhi University, kottayam in the year 2019. Around 2500 UG and 1000 PG students graduated from the Department so far.

The world famous Indian mathematician Dr. K S S Nambooripad is an eminent alumni of this Department. He has made fundamental contributions to the structure theory of regular semigroups and Nambooripad was also instrumental in popularizing the TeX software in India
